The Footy Show Stakes, The AFL Grand Final Show
This year saw the return of my animations on The AFL Footy Show. The Footy Show Stakes took an irreverant look at the week’s news in football in the form of a horse race. The 90 second segment featured the whose who of Australian football as well as topical pop culture and political references. The first Stakes segment received more than 337,000 hits online the night it aired.
Due to the success of the segment throughout the year I was asked to provide the animation to the opening 6 minutes of The Grand Final edition of the show. The Stakes parodies a Melbourne Cup telecast hosted by Bruce McAvaney with a special tribute in song to long time on air partner Dennis Cometti.
The race features highlights from the year’s segment together with a surprise finish which transforms cartoon hosts into their live entrance on the Rod Laver Stage.
The segment was watched by over 923,000 viewers.
